The Obsidian connectors you can install today run next to Obsidian, over a local pipe. Shut the lid and your notes are unreachable. Knap is an endpoint your AI signs in to, so it answers wherever you are.
On a phone, Obsidian and your AI never meet
The vault is right there and Claude cannot see a word of it. The one place you actually capture a thought is the one place the two do not talk.
So you paste the background in again
Every new conversation starts by explaining what the project is, who the client is and what you decided last month. You wrote all of that down already.
What your AI can do in there
Ask in plain language. The tools work the way Obsidian works, so links stay links, tags stay tags and frontmatter is something you can query rather than something to grep past.
Find
Free text over titles and bodies, or narrowed the way your vault is actually organised: by tag, by folder, by frontmatter property, by date. Backlinks and outgoing links come back too, unresolved ones included.
Which notes mention the Acme renewal, and what did I decide?
Read
A note arrives with its frontmatter, its headings and its links intact, not as a wall of text. Long notes come back in chunks instead of blowing up the conversation. Images, PDFs and voice memos are part of the vault, so they are readable too.
Summarise everything tagged #project/acme from the last month.
Write
Add to the end of a note or under a named heading, replace what sits under one heading, or set a frontmatter property without touching the body. Daily notes land where your own Obsidian would have put them.

It edits like a person, not like a script
Changing two lines patches one section instead of rewriting the note, so the diff is the change and nothing else. Every read hands back a revision marker, and a write that would clobber an edit you just made in Obsidian is refused rather than merged. That matters more than it sounds: a vault in git remembers a careless rewrite forever.
How it fits together
Your AI speaks MCP. Obsidian speaks its own sync. Knap sits in between, and your notes stay files.
It signs in as you.
There is no service account with a key to everything, and no separate permissions for the AI. Your assistant reaches the vaults you reach, which means adding an AI grants it nothing you did not already have.
It stays plain markdown.
The files on your disk are the notes. Knap keeps a copy in sync and reads from that, and nothing about the format is ours. Stop using it and every device still holds a working vault.
Then invite the people you work with
A vault does not have to be one person's. Add colleagues by email and the same notes become what the company remembers.
Two people, one note
Edits merge while you type, so nobody ends up with Conflicted copy 2 in their folder. Work offline on a train and it catches up when you reconnect.
Everyone brings their own AI
Each person connects their own Claude, and it sees exactly what that person sees. Take someone out of the vault and their assistant loses it in the same moment.
Nothing reads it on the side
There is no indexing account with access to every note in the company, because there is no account that is not a person. That is the design, not a setting.

Install the plugin and sign in again
The plugin is not in Obsidian's community catalogue yet, so Browse will not find it. Install BRAT, add pantalytics/knap-obsidian as a beta plugin, and enable Knap. Then press Sign in and pick the vault this device syncs with. Desktop and phone both work.

Add the connector to your AI
Paste one URL into claude.ai as a custom connector and sign in. From then on your notes answer from wherever you are logged in.
Step two is longer than it should be, and it gets shorter the day the plugin is listed in the catalogue. The plugin lives at pantalytics/knap-obsidian.

We will price this once we know what it costs to run for somebody who is not us. When that happens you hear it before anything changes, and the Obsidian plugin and the MCP server stay open source either way.
Questions people ask
I already use Obsidian Sync. Can I run both?
No, and this is the one thing to decide before you start. A vault gets one sync system: two of them on the same files read each other's writes as a person's, and produce conflicts neither can resolve. Moving to Knap means turning the other one off for that vault.
Make your own copy of the vault folder first. Nothing here rewrites your notes, and a first sync is still the moment to have a copy no sync can reach.
Can I give someone read-only access?
Not today. A vault has one role and it can do everything, so everybody you add sees all of it and can change all of it. We would rather say that plainly than ship a permission that only looks like one.
What is not for everyone belongs in a second vault, which is Obsidian's own answer to the same question.
What can the AI not do yet?
Creating a note, moving one, renaming one and deleting one are not wired up on the hosted service yet, and neither is replacing a whole note body in one go. Ask for any of those and you get a refusal rather than a mess.
Searching, reading, appending, patching a section, setting frontmatter properties and reading attachments all work today. That covers most of what people actually ask for, and the rest is what the beta is for.
Do my notes pass through Pantalytics?
Yes. That is what hosting is. Your vault syncs to our servers in the EU, and a searchable markdown copy lives there so your AI can answer questions about the whole vault instead of one note at a time.
What we do not do is put a note's path or its content in an error report or a metric. Details are in our privacy statement and DPA.
Which AI tools work with it?
Any MCP client that can reach an HTTP endpoint. claude.ai is the one we build against, on desktop and on the phone, and Claude Desktop and Claude Code work the same way. It is the same protocol as our Odoo and mail connectors, so if one of those works for you this will too.
What happens to my notes if I stop?
Nothing. They are markdown files on every device you synced, and they stay exactly where they are. Delete the cloud vault and each device keeps a full working copy, because the files were never only ours to hold.
